Chicago Character Playbook LIVE
On Tuesday, September 19, 2017 Chicago Bears LB, Sam Acho, hosted a video conference chat from Halas Hall with about 200 students from 8 schools in the Metro Chicago area. The event included a true or false activity followed by Sam fielding a few questions from the students in attendance.
As a person of high character, Sam was the perfect person to broach the topic of character education with the students. In a lot of ways, Sam was the typical middle school kid. Football wasn’t top of mind, and he faced a lot of the difficulties that most face in trying to identify who he wanted to be. Sam was different in that he wasn’t always worried about how his peers viewed him. In one story he mentioned how he would recognize that certain kids would usually be picked last at recess. When he had his chance at being the captain, he would pick those kids first to let them know that their feelings mattered more than winning to him.
Sam’s message to the students was powerful and he ended with saying, “I believe in you, now it’s time for you to believe in yourself.”
